How does the Candidate Strength Score compare to the Academic Index

The Academic Index (described very well in Michelle Hernandez’s book A is for Admission) is an index that Ivy League schools use to level set college admission application profiles for athletes applying to the Ivy League. This index focuses almost exclusively on academic performance and can be a directional indicator of college chances for parents, students, and college counselors. The AI is often a starting point and other “subjective” components are added after to determine strength of a college admission application.

Unlike the AI, the Candidate Strength Score is a more holistic proxy for profile strength (and thus college chances) because it takes into account several factors beyond academics that are critical to college chances. The Candidate Strength Score places weights on over 200 factors used in colleges admission decisions: academics, strength of courseload, standardized tests, grade trends, extras, work experience, etc. The index has been carefully calibrated by a broad college admission counselor panel and individuals intimately familiar with colleges admission practices.

The Candidate Strength Score is the most comprehensive profile assessment tool available to the student, parent, and college counselor. It can complement Naviance and Naviance Connection because of its multi-factor algorithms that capture all aspects of the evaluated portion of the college admission application.

Understanding a high school student’s Candidate Strength Score can serve as a starting point for understanding strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement. This can be a critical starting point for the college admission counseling process.
